John Crichton was from Barony, Glasgow, Scotland. He was a man who got into a LOT of trouble while in the army. With full service papers & history.

Pte Crichton's copy service papers (in colour) are now with us. He was clearly a bit of a 'bad lad' and was constantly in trouble.

(1) Tried, Flogged & Released for Breaking Out of Camp.
(2) Confined for Losing Ammunition.
(3) Imprisoned for Absence.
(4) Court Marshall for Receiving Stolen Property.
(5) Forfeited South Africa Medal, by order of District Court Marshall, 15th November 1879.

An excellent medal that has clearly survived against all the odds. Upon arriving at the unit this medal was probably left in the charge of his Commanding Officer and later disposed of. Although flogging was still very much in use during the Zulu campaign, it's very uncommon indeed to come across a soldier who's records confirm that he was actually flogged. The practice was abolished for offences on overseas service from 1881.
