[BIOGRAPHY]
John Thomas LOWEN was born in 1873 at Chigwell, Warley, Essex. Prior to enlistment he was employed as a Groom. He joined up at Warley on 29th June 1891 aged 18 and was photographed in his new uniform by R. Raynor the local photograher at Newport Studio, Warley. He served in India & with greatly distinguished service during the Boer War in South Africa where he was Mentioned in Despatches by Lord Roberts. (London Gazette 8th February 1901).

At the outset of WW1 LOWEN also 'promptly' signed up for 6th Essex Regt on 6th August 1914 but was initially discharged after just 9 days as "medically unfit for continued military service" on 15th August. However, he seems to have persisted and is seen serving at a home posting as a sergeant until his final discharge on 10th April 1919. He was obviously determined to do his bit !! ...so well done John .
