A Very Desirable 1914-15 Star CASUALTY Trio with Plaque, To: 5484. Sgt Frederick Thomas SPITTLE.12th Bn NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS.KILLED IN ACTION (FRICOURT) 23rd JUNE 1916.From HILLSBOROUGH, SHEFFIELD. Fred Spittle was born in 1889 at WOODHOUSE, Yorkshire, the son of Abraham & Mary Elisabeth Spittle. On the 1911 census he is shown as 22 and living with his parents, two brothers & two sisters at 71 Hawksby Avenue, HILLSBOROUGH, Sheffield. Prior to enlistment he was a "Spring Painter" on the railways. Fred was fighting on the Somme at Fricourt just prior to 'The Big Push' of 1st July. The regimental war diary gives three OR's killed on 22nd June after enemy shelling. It is thought that Fred was one of these as there are no casualties listed in the diary for 23rd.He was 27. Fred is remembered with eternal honour at:DARTMOOR CEMETERY, BECORDEL- BECOURT. (SOMME).
