1914- 1915 Star Trio & Plaque. To:11028. H.H. RIGGS. 9/DEVON RGT(KILLED-IN-ACTION. 28th August 1915)[THE BIOGRAPHY]Herbert & Harold Riggs were both born in Devon. Herbert at Sidmouth in 1897 and Harold in Otterty St Mary in 1892. They both enlisted at Exeter. The two brothers were the sons of John Gibson Riggs & Louisa Riggs of Pike's Cottage, Collaton Raleigh, Devon.A VERY EARLY CASUALTY..Only 20 days in France. Herbert arrived in France with 2/Devon's on 6th November 1914. He and his unit entrained to Stazeele on 8th November via Rouen, Abbeville, Calais & St Omer. On 11th November they were at Neuve Eglise and took over the trenches opposite MESSINESS RIDGE on 12th. On 17th they rejoined 8th Division at Estaires and on 18th took over trenches South of Rue du Bacquerot. On 24th November they relieved 2nd Scots Rifles. Herbert was in trenches on 27th November, where after just 20 days in France he was killed in action. He was 28 years old and is buried at Aubers Ridge Cemetery. KILLED AFTER ONLY 30 DAYS IN FRANCE.Harold, who had been a farm labourer, landed in France on 28th July 1915 and was killed in action only 30 days later on 28th August 1915 during the battles at Neuve Chapelle & Aurbers Ridge which spanned May-September 1915. He was 24 and is buried at Pont-Du-Hem military cemetery, La Gorgue, France. Herbert & Harold were two of the EIGHT children of the Riggs family.A Very Emotive "Double Casualty" Two Brothers grouping fit for the finest collection of Devon's medals.
