A TRAGIC 1914-15 Star & Plaque Trio. To: S/6709. Pte (Rifleman) W.B. WALKER. 4th Bn RIFLE BRIGADE.[BIOGRAPHY]WILLIAM BETHUNE WALKER was born in 1880 and was from Stockton-on-Tees. Before enlistment he was a Tailor (maker) and joined up in his home town.ENTERED FRANCE...1st MAY 1915KILLED-IN-ACTION 8th MAY 1915.... JUST 7 DAYS LATER ! William was 35 when he was lost without trace during the fierce fighting to hold the trenches around BELLEWAARDE WOOD & LAKE where between 22nd April & 14th May 1915 the Casualty Roll was 116 Killed, 606 Wounded & 46 Missing. From our wide experience this is the very shortest period of active service in the field that we can ever remember seeing. Such was the desperation to push new troops into the field during the spring of 1915.
William Walker's name is Commemorated with Eternal Honour on The Menin Gate along with those of 57,000 other soldiers who's bodies were lost without trace during the various battles in Belgium during the Great War of 1914-1918. A VERY SPECIAL GROUP THAT WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE RETURN TO STOCKTON-on-TEES.Medals EF+ on original ribbons. £595
