[HISTORICAL BACKGROUND]
The day of 5th September 1916 was marked by fierce fighting and artillery duels near the village of GUILLEMONT a fortified position to the South of Delville Wood. John Kay is buried at QUARRY CEMETERY, MONTAUBAN VI. C. 3. Grave Inscription: ( PEACE PERFECT PEACE )
Two other RHA lads were also killed in this same incident when an enemy shell hit their gun. They were: 56856 Cpl EDWARD WALLIS HANCOCK and 47840 Pte ARTHUR EDWARD AYRE. These two lads are also buried within a few feet of John Kay in the same cemetery. VI. C. 6 and VI. C. 8 respectively,

With an interesting selection of original dog tags: (1) His original pre-war aluminium tag with retaining ring.(2) His two WW1 fibre tags ( the green one being impervious to water, the red impervious to fire....there is a tiny red lucky pig on the WW1 tag string !!! ....obviously it worked !! ) Joseph Kay was born at Landport Portsmouth on 17th February 1895 and prior to his enlistment in the R.M.A. on 20th February 1912 at age 17 had been a carpenter.
