ARTHUR FREDERICK ANDREWS was born in St Pancras in 1895. He was a resident of Highgate and enlisted there in 1914. He entered France on 22nd. December 1915 and initially served in the trenches East of Fonquelliers. During the battle of the Somme Arthur was lucky to survive the actions at Ovillers, Poziers, Mametz Wood and High Wood. Toward the end if the battle of the Somme he was in the front line at Beaumont Hamel and took part in the capture of Beaumont Trench while attached to 63rd Naval Division. He was also in action on 9th April 1917 during the battles around Arras and during the southern advance along the River Scarpe. He was also at the capture of Monchy Le Preux where there was heavy fighting until 11th April when Pte Andrews was Killed-in-Action. There were 68 men of the 13th KIA that day with a further 30 men dying of wounds the next day. Private Arthur Andrews' body was never found at the time & he is commemorated with eternal honour on the Arras Memorial (Bay 3)
HOWEVER !!! In 1997 the bodies of 27 Royal Fusiliers were found during modern building excavations and were re-intered......ALL of these men were killed on 11th April and it is therefore entirely possible that one of these brave men was Arthur Andrews.
