AN EXCELLENT EARLY ENTRANT (10th August) 1914 Star & Bar Trio (Made Prisoner of War at MESSINES RIDGE 1st NOVEMBER 1914.) To: 8363 Pte R. MAYLON, 2/YORKS LIGHT INFANTRY.( Shown as MALYON on his M.I.C. & 8365 on war medal) 2nd KOYLI was one of the first units into France at the start of WW1 ...Maylon's MIC gives an entry date of 10th August 1914 which was only 6 days after the declaration and is one of the earliest entry dates we have seen.The Battle of Messines took place between 12th October - 2nd November 1914. Clearly Richard Maylon was captured on the day before the end of the battle. He is registered as POW number R.53519. His notification of capture was made on 11th December 1914 by the Red Cross.
