[BIOGRAPHY]
307307 L/Cpl Smith Oldroyd was born in August 1893 at Tattersfield Yard, Kilpin Hill, Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. He had previously been employed as a blacksmith. At age 26 he had originally joined the 2nd ( Reserve) Bn West Riding Regt on 8th December 1915 and had spent two months in the reserve (training) before attesting for 7th Bn on 8th February 1916 for further training in the UK. He left for France on 15/16th June 1916 just in time for action on the Somme in July. He was a very small man of only 5ft 4" tall, but with what was clearly a giant amount of courage.

His unit was in the thick of the action at Ypres when on 13th June 1918 he was seriously wounded in the left hand & left buttock by both a bomb (hand grenade) injury & a gun shot wound. He was immediately hospitalised at Boulogne on 14th June 1918 and shipped back to the UK with an arrival on 26th June 1918. It was during this action that he performed the act of bravery which led to the award of his Military Medal as his award was classically published three months later in the London gazette of 16th September 1918.

Whatever it was that L/Cpl Oldroyd was up to on that fateful day of 13th June 1918, he certainly earned his M.M.as his extensive medical papers go into the minute detail of his injuries and his compensation. Having been a blacksmith before the war it was determined that he would not be able to return to his previous employment due to his inability to grip with his left hand.

This period of the Great War was characterised by fierce hand to hand fighting against the German spring campaign that had begun in the April. Many trench raids were going on and we can only guess at exactly what little Smith Oldroyd did on that day which led to his award & his wounding.

Ironically, Oldroyd, who was still in service on 12th August 1919 and who was about to be promoted to Sergeant is seen on that day being "Deprived of the rank of Acting Sergeant" for the offence of "Being in bed after reveille" He was basically caught having a lay in by his C.S.M. !!

"There's no peace in the Army"

Condition wise, this is one of the very finest Military Medals we have ever handled.

For those of you who collect & understand coins & numismatic grading, the medal is proof-like and practically F.D.C. (Mint State MS68) Oldroyd is also entitled to a WW1 war & victory medal pair, but clearly his MM which has never been worn, never ever came into contact with them.
