[BIOGRAPHY]
Frank Ernest Jewell was born 29th September 1889 into a Church of England family in Brixton, London. He attended St John's College, Brixton before taking up pre-war employment as an insurance clerk with The Scottish Union & National Insurance Co. He is first seen attesting for 21st Bn London's on 9th March 1909 at age 19.6 He was a short lad of only 5ft 4" . Between 1st August 1909 and 17th August 1913 he attended five annual summer training camps on Salisbury Plain.

[TO FRANCE]
At the outbreak of war he is seen entering France on 4th November 1914 with 1/5th Londons. He was appointed lance corporal 12.12.1915 His papers confirm that he was initially discharged with an Exemplary record on 3rd April 1916 aged 27 and is recorded as being at home until 15th December 1916. He is then next recorded as again serving in France from 14th December 1916 to 7th April 1917 with 1/5th Londons (T.F.) having clearly re-engaged with his regiment.

Clearly keen to continue his military service, Frank is then seen being accepted for officer training at No.16 Officer Cadet School at Rhyl in North Wales on 5th May 1917 and being recommended for a commission as 2/Lt with the Royal Lancaster Regt (LG 25th Sept 1917)

His training completed he is then seen being appointed ( acting 2/Lt ) Cpl with 3rd Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regt on 28th August 1917. At some time during the late summer & autumn Frank was then transferred to attached service with 1/4th Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.

It was with 1/4th KOYLI that he was Killed In Action near ZONNEBEKE in the early morning of 15th December 1917. Frank and two of his men of "Z" Company were killed instantly when a German shell made a direct hit on their trench position. One other man was wounded. War Diary confirms.

In his officers' file of which we have made a complete copy, his father Herbert E. Jewell is seen writing to the war office for more details about the death of his son. Further correspondence with the war office relates that no further details were available to his dad at the time. Indeed we think that due to the then non-public availability of WW1 army records that Frank's dad never actually knew what had befallen his son.

A Scarce "Old Contemptible" (Promoted From The Ranks) "Zonnebeke Casualty" Officer [FRANK'S HEADSTONE IN BELGIUM]

Frank's remains were initially buried close to where he was killed at Zonnebeke, but were later reinterred at White House Cemetery, St.Jean-Les-Ypres, Belgium where he now rests with eternal honour.

An excellent & original officer's casualty group to a man with long and much varied service in the British Army who rose from the ranks to attain a commission.
