AN "OLD CONTEMPTIBLE'S" 1914 STAR & BAR 'CASUALTY' TRIO & PLAQUE. To: 9806. Pte J. PRICE. 1st & 7th KING'S SHROPSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. KILLED IN ACTION (Battle of Lys) 14th April 1918 [BIOGRAPHY]
Joseph William Price was born in 1896 in the parish of St George's, Shrewsbury. He was the son of William E & Mary Elizabeth Lewis (previously Price) . He initially enlisted into the 1st Bn K.S.L.I. at Shrewsbury. Based on his regimental number he joined up in late 1911 at the young age of 16. By the outbreak of war he was 19 and still a single man, and along with his original unit (1st Bn) he landed in France on 10th September 1914. Having survived a large number of actions from the outset of the war. He then transfered to 7th Bn and it is sad to relate that Joseph Price finally fell as late as April 1918 during The Battle of Lys in what was the German Spring Offensive (Operation Michael). He was just 22.
We have a copy of his simple soldiers will and his effects were left to his mother Mrs W.E. Lewis of 44 Copthorne Road, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
Joseph is remembered with honour at Chocques Military Cemetery and the original & rare CWG grave photograph card is present with the group.
All medals, ribbons and plaque are 'mint' with papers.
A lovely group to a brave young Shropshire lad.
