Bertie Gray was born in Addington Surrey on 23rd July 1872. He joined the R.N. on 23rd July 1890 on his 19th Birthday as Boy II Cl . Previously a labourer, he served from 1890 to 1898 when he is seen as an AB being invalided out of the service. Of generally "VG" character, he spent 14 days in the cells of HMS St George during his time in Africa.He had various tattoos, including: ring tattoo on 3rd finger left hand, Star & Ring on left forearm, Heart on right forearm, Also, the tips of two fingers on his right hand had been cut off.
