"On operation MARKET on September 18th, S/Sgt Johnstone took charge of 20 other glider pilots from "A" Squadron who were without an officer. Throughout the operation he led them on many successful patrols and in the final withdrawal to the river. He showed great resourcefulness, courage and cheerfulness and although leading men of equal rank, his leadership was never doubted."
