AN EXCELLENT & EXCEPTIONALLY NICE INDIAN GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL (1854) “HAZARA 1888” To: 1371 Sgt H. MITCHELL. 2nd Bn ROYAL SUSSEX REGt. (MINT STATE IN ORIGINAL CASE) [BIOGRAPHY] 1871-1939
GEORGE HENRY MITCHELL was born in Horsham in 1871. Prior to joining the army on 23rd August at age 19 he was employed as a Groom. He was described as being 5’ 4” tall, 34” inch chest, of fresh complexion, hazel eyes & brown hair. He was of Church of England persuasion. He was married while in Bombay, India, to Mary Anne Mitchell (nee Richardson) on 27th November, 1888. He served for 23 years with exemplary conduct and is also entitled to an L.S.G.C. which was awarded him on 1st October 1901. He was discharged in Gosport Hants as a Colour Sgt, Acting Sgt Major with 1st Bn on 22nd August 1906. After discharge he initially lived in Epsom, Surrey, but later moved to Heston, Hounslow, Middlesex to be near to his son Henry. He died age 73 at home in Heston on 31st January 1939 of Colitis Enteritis while in a coma.
