[BIOGRAPHY] 1876-1923
John GERAGHTY was born at Atherstone, Warwickshire in 1876.
He joined the Army at Hinckley on 29th August 1895 at age 19.
He had previously worked as a coal miner. He had been a member of 3rd Royal Warwickshire Regt prior to his enlistment in 1st Leicesters in 1895 but he declared an earlier refusal of service due to his previously small chest measurement of under 34 inches.
He was only a small lad of 119lbs & 5ft 4”. He was of Roman Catholic persuasion.
He served for exactly 12 years from 29th August 1895 to 28th August 1907 with 5 years & 257 days service in South Africa from 24th April 1897 to 5th January 1903 while taking part in The Defence of Ladysmith , and the actions at Belfast, Laing’s Nek, & Talana.
John was born, lived & died in Atherstone aged 47 in June 1923.
An outstanding clasp combination to a young Leicestershire lad with excellent battle service in four critical actions during the Boer War.
