As Hugh’s service number is prefixed by an “S” it denotes that he volunteered for war service and had not been a regular soldier. Like many many thousands of his comrades, Hugh’s body was lost without trace. He has no known grave and is Commemorated with Eternal Honour on The Menin Gate,Ypres, Belgium.
(Rupert Brooke the famous war poet died on this same day.)
