This fabulously rare & museum quality item is one of the two most unobtainable of all the items that formed part of the famous “Princess Mary 1914 Christmas Gift Fund” series.

These now “Fabulously Rare” soldiers’ writing sets were sent to France by the Princess Mary Fund as 1914 Christmas gifts to men in the trenches who for religious and other reasons did not smoke. AN EXCESSIVELY RARE (& PRACTICALLY UNOBTAINABLE)
PRINCESS MARY’S CHRISTMAS FUND 1914. “Crested & 1914 Dated Original Canvas Stationary Wallet, Pencil & Writing Set” It is believed that many of them ended up in the hands of officers as the clearly recognisable light blue envelopes and correctly sized paper are often seen having been used by officers’ for letters sent back home to England from the trenches of France. It’s a sad fact that many men wrote their last ever letters home by using the pencil, paper & envelopes contained in these sets.

This fabulous set is a sheer miracle survivor and is totally intact and even still retains the slightly thicker “black lined’ writing guide sheet !.....and it also has the original darker blue paper bands around the envelopes. It really doesn’t come any better than this !

This supremely rare stationary case and assembly is practically “as it was made” in 1914 here in England. We are not sure who the manufacturer was but we will take a guess at John Dickinson & Co.

As with the Asprey’s Long Wick & Flint Cigarette lighter on the previous listing, I’ve personally only ever had this one single example of the writing set in my entire career of 46 years and I’ve seen only ever seen a couple of odd wallets & Part Sets at various collectors’ shows & Military fairs !
