AN IMPORTANT 'COLLINGWOOD' ROYAL NAVAL DIVISION "P.O.W." 1914 STAR & BAR TRIO. A CLASSIC EARLY ANTWERP INTERNEE & P.O.W.To:L.3/3595. C. GROOM. A.B. R.N.V.R. COLLINGWOOD BATTALION. ROYAL NAVAL DIVISION.CLIFFORD CHARLES GROOM WAS CALLED UP FROM THE RESERVE ON 12th AUGUST 1914. HE ENTERED FRANCE ON 15th SEPTEMBER 1914 AND WAS INTERNED & CAPTURED DURING OPERATIONS at ANTWERP ON 8th OCTOBER 1914.HE WAS MADE PRISONER OF WAR at DOBERITZ, GERMANYAND NOT RELEASED UNTIL 19th DECEMBER 1918.HISTORY[ANTWERP]On the 3rd October 1914 orders were received to move the Marine Brigade to defend Antwerp. It arrived at 1 a.m. on the 4th October, to a position four miles due south of the city. The two Naval Brigades were then called into action arriving on the outskirts of the city in the early hours of the 6th October. In the early evening of the 8th October orders were given for the Royal Naval Division to retire from the city. In the confusion of the withdrawal most of the 1st Brigade, the Hawke, Benbow and Collingwood Battalions crossed the Dutch frontier and were interned at Groningen. Only the Drake Battalion got away, having left the city early.Clifford Charles Groom, Born: 20th June 1890 at 23 Castle Street, Hinckley, Leicestershire. Pre-War he lived at : 109 Hallam Street, London WC. and is shown as being a 'Traveller' (which then meant he was a ' Rep' or a Commercial travelling salesman. Next of Kin: (Mother) Mrs Groom (Deceased) of Mayfield, 7 Grafton Steet, Bedford. MEDALS ARE "MINT" WITH ORIGINAL RIBBONS.
