John William YATES was born in Market Weighton (Yorks) on 11th December 1877 . He enlisted into the R.M.A. at Hull on 11th October 1900. His father was at Southgate, Market Weighton, Yorks and his wife was living at 72 Morgan Road Bromley in Kent.
In the early months of The Great War from 27th -31August 1914 he was at Ostend.
And from 11th September to 17th October 1914, his papers show he served on “Operations in France with The Royal Flying Corps”
He is shown as wounded while with the RFC .
Later, between 22nd April 1915 -31 December 195 he also served with
R.M.A. Anti-Aircraft Brigade.
*He was probably initially acting as an armed guard on the early RFC aircraft and being an experienced gunner with 15 years service he may even have been seconded as a Gunner Observer.
