LONG SERVICE GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL (GVI). (RAF)
To:
562072. LAC/ CPL / WO Francis Dalzell. RAF.
Dalzell was a Boy Entrant in 1929 with extensive pre-war service in India ( probably with 39 Squadron...Bombers ) and full WW2 Service in Bomber Command .
He worked on complex electronic and navigational systems such as H2S in Lancaster Bombers and was clearly a top expert in his field. Based on his level of experience and knowing a good deal abouit RAF matters myself, I would not be in the least surprised to be told that he probably accompanied the aircrew on bombing raids when calibrating comples bomb sights on which he was a leading expert. This was a common situation with top avionics and Nav' Ins' electronics people who in many cases could not diagnose in flight electrical problems without actual 'hands on' and operational flying inspection. Although 'technically' not entitled to even a1939-45 Star, he is probably, based on actual/potential air time over Europe, well entitled to both 39-45 Star and an Aircrew Europe.
Retired 1952 !
ex- RAF Boscombe Down experimental Unit
( A 23 year service )
An excellent and scarce group which includes his RAF record of service.
