* Note: James Mc Cudden VC was informally trained to fly while serving as an Air Mechanic with 3 Squadron, both before WW1 and during the early part of the war in France. His "unofficial" instructor was 2nd Lt Vivian H.N. WADHAM who's medals are listed in the RFC section on this web site. Mc CUDDEN mentions flying with "Mr Wadham" on several occassions in his well known book " Flying Fury, 5 Years in the Royal Flying Corps". Sadly Viv' Wadham did not live to see how his "star pupil" turned out or see him win his Victoria Cross as he (Wadham) was killed in 1916.. and of course McCudden himself did not survive the war.
