Who Died of Wounds on 27th September 1914.

[HISTORY]
CHARLES ROBERT YOUNG was born in Ireland. (Sandford, Dublin) The son of Dr Benjamin Poyntz Young and Anne Grimes Young, of 26 Upper Dorset Street, he was born on 9 October 1890, and was baptised at St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral [RC] on 27 October 1890. [This appears to be somewhat unusual. Although recorded in the 1901 and 1911 census lists as "Church of Ireland" (Anglican) many of the couple's children were baptised as Roman Catholics.]


Previously an officer in the merchant navy serving as 4th officer in the S. S. Bray Head. The decision to join the army meant Charles had a lucky escape as the Bray Head SS was later intercepted by German submarine U-44 when 375 miles N.W. by W. of Fastnet on March 14th, 1917. The submarine opened fire from the surface and sank the vessel with the loss of 21 persons, including the captain. The vessel was on route from St. John, New Brunswick for Belfast.

Because his father was a Doctor (Captain) serving with the RAMC in Ireland, Charles had enlisted into the British army (RAMC) at Liverpool on 10th June 1912.

On the outbreak of war 13th Field Ambulance which were part of 5th division were in barracks in Ireland in August 1914. Upon declaration of war they moved to France immediately and arrived on 17th August just 13 days after the declaration of war.During the early weeks of the war it was with 5th division and served as follows : The Battle of Mons and subsequent retreat, including the Action of Elouges: The Battle of Le Cateau and the Affair of Crepy-en-Valois: The Battle of the Marne: The Battle of the Aisne The Battles of La Bassee and Messines 1914.


Charles' MIC shows him as Killed in Action, but he actually died of wounds received during the Battle of the Aisne during the massive German attacks of 24/25th September 1914.



He passed away on 27th September at No.3 General Hospital at Derval, St Nazaire and is commemorated with eternal honour at St Nazaire (Toutes-Aides) Cemetery, Loire-Atlantique, France. Row B, Grave 34. He was 23 years old.

Charles was the son of Mrs Anne Young of 17, Sandymount Rd, Dublin, and the late Captain (Doctor) Benjamin Poyntz Young (R.A.M.C.) who himself died of paralysis in hospital in Ireland on 6th November 1916, aged 60. We assume that Doctor Young suffered a stroke. He is buried near the North path at Drumcondra St.George's Burial Ground.

Charles also had a younger brother who also died as a result of the war. He was L/Cpl Hector Albert Young. No.B/202230. "C" Coy 10th Bn Rifle Brigade. Died of pneumonia 30th December 1918, age 23. Son of Mrs Ann Young, of 17 Sandymount Rd., Dublin and the late Capt Benjamin Poyntz Young (RAMC). Buried in Tidworth Military Cemetery-Wiltshire. Grave No.A.61. Hector Albert, Rifle Brigade, died of illness contracted on active service at Military Hospital, Tidworth, 30th December, 1918
