Private (No. 995) Lazar, Queen's Own Madras Sappers & Miners.
Lazar saw service during the Suakin 1885 operations from 1st March to 14th May 1885. He also took part in the action at Tofrek on 22nd March 1885, when having marched to Tamai, Sudan to build three fortified bases, he and his unit were attacked by a major local Arab force of the Hadendoa tribe.
After severe fighting the enemy were a successfully driven off, losing 3,000 killed or died of wounds.

After almost 50 years of full time involvement in medals we’ve never come across such a group with anything like this incredibly impressive & rare medal & clasp combination. Normally one only encounters slightly “tatty” single medals which have been split up.
These medals are also in exceptional condition and are head and shoulders above those normally encountered to this unit.
