[TO THE BALKANS & INTO ACTION]
Thomas Powell embarked to Theatre 2B (The Balkans) on 11th July 1915 and after only 27 days in action he was killed in action on 7th August 1915 during the “Battle of Nek” at Gallipoli.
His unit was given the task of taking and holding the entrenched Turkish positions at “Hill 10”. Their next objective was to have been “Chocolate Hill” in conjunction with the 8th Northumberland Fusiliers & the 5th Dorsets. Casualties were so severe that the secondary action did not take place.
As with so many men who fell in this vicious campaign, Tom’s body was lost without trace & he has no known grave.
