After the D-Day landings in Normandy on 6th June 1944, the various components of the French Resistance were organised into a system of units known as the French Forces of the Interior (FFI). This organisation had a strength of 100,000 by June 1944. The FFI membership grew rapidly and reached 400,000 members by the end of the year.
