A RARE & ORIGINAL EARLY 19th Century "HORATIO NELSON" COMMEMORATIVE BRASS SNUFF, TOBACCO OR TRINKET BOX. 2.50" Inches in Diameter, 1.00" Deep.
This lovely original box was made circa,1805 to commemorate the life of Admiral Nelson and his victory over the combined French & Spanish Fleet on 21st October 1805 at The Battle of Trafalgar.
The most accurate portrait is clearly based on the famous pencil drawing of Nelson of which Lady Hamilton described as being a very accurate likeness.
These lidded brass boxes which bear the deeply impressed portrait of Lord Nelson were made in London shortly after news of the Admiral's death & victory reached England. Rarely seen these days, they do occur in various styles with and without varying designs & decoration to the vertical sides of the cylinder. This example has four incuse beaded bands around its circumference.
The box is in superb original and undamaged condition with a wonderfully smooth surface and naturally time developed brass patina which feels really good to the touch. Clearly this example has been a well loved piece from the time of purchase until today as it has zero damage.
A Strictly One Only Item. VERY SCARCE & HIGHLY DESIRABLE.
