(Lieutenant, 1810)
John Macnevin was born about 1780 in Ireland. He entered the Royal Navy on 10th August 1797 as a First Class Volunteer at about age 17 on board HMS SHANNON (32) under Captain Alexander Fraser, on the coast of Ireland.

He served for nine years between 1799 and August 1808, on the Mediterranean and Home Stations, chiefly in the capacity of Midshipman in the frigate HMS DIANA under Captain John P. Beresford and Captain Thomas James Maling, and in H.M. ships HERCULE, SUPERB, ROYAL GEORGE, & BELLEISLE, flag ships of Admirals Dacres, Sir John Thomas Duckworth, and Sir Alexander Cochrane.

GUADALOUPE & MARTINIQUE To: Lieut JOHN MACNEVIN R.N. Fought at New Orleans, U.S.A. during American War of 1812.
Full service record & biography. On 31st August 1810 at age 30 after having intermediately acted as Lieutenant of the sloops HMS WOLVERINE & SUPERIEURE, he was confirmed in that rank.

His next appointments were 24th October to HMS DEFIANCE (74) Captain Richard Raggett, off the Texel - 9th December 1811 to the brig SPIDER, Captain Frank Gore Willcock. In the West Indies -on 3rd November 1813 he took his first command of the schooner HMS BALLAHOU also in the West Indies.

On 22nd April 1814 to HMS CHARYBDIS (16) Captain James Clapham, under whom he accompanied the expedition against NEW ORLEANS.

He was paid off from the last mentioned vessel in August 1815 at age 35 (*presumably to military shore duties) and since 27th November 1822 has been in command of a station in the coast guard.

He married in 1836, Eliza, the second daughter of John Mc Mahon Blackhall, of Kilcard, Co.Clare, Ireland.

This is a really historic, excellent & rare medal awarded to an officer with an exciting naval history who travelled extensively and importantly took part in The War of 1812 against the United States of America with service in New Orleans.

GUADALOUPE & MARTINIQUE To: Lieut JOHN MACNEVIN R.N. Fought at New Orleans, U.S.A. during American War of 1812.
Full service record & biography. A very rare two clasp Officer’s award....and a much loved & totally original medal which has clearly been much treasured and oft’ cleaned & worn by the proud recipient, but save natural cleaning wear it has sustained zero damage or knocks to the disc edges and with a slight bend in the top clasp.

Obviously it was last cleaned long long ago by the recipient himself and is presenting pretty much as John Macnevin last saw it and wore it.
