An Excellent East & West Africa Medal ("1891-92") To: CHARLES RANDOLPH TOMS. H.M.S. WIDGEON. Charles was born on 25th November 1871 and joined the R.N. on 25th November 1889. He was previously an errand boy from Stoke Damerel, Plymouth. He served in H.M.S. WIDGEON during the African campaign of 1891-92.(HMS WIDGEON)A light cruiser built at Pembroke Dockyard, Pembroke, Wales 1889 she was of 165 feet with a beam of 31 feet and a displacement of 805 tons and had a single triple expansion engine of 1,200 hp and a speed of 13 knots. Her Armamen consisted of 6 x inch guns & 2 x 3 pounder guns. She had a crew complement of 76 and was sold for scrap in 1906.
Charles Tom died very young of Acute Pneumonia 11th March 1900 at 36 Clarence Place, Morice Town, Devonport. Age 28.A Superb EF medal. With copy service sheet. £550
