SOUKIN 1896. "ONE OF THE RAREST MEDALS IN THE ROYAL NAVY SERIES"
AN EXTREMELY RARE "SINGLE ENTITLEMENT" ROYAL NAVY
KHEDIVE'S SUDAN MEDAL.
To:
J. BUTLER. AB H.M.S. MELITA. SOUKIN 1896.
NOTE:
This is Able Seaman Butler's only entitlement as he and the vast majority of his few entitled fellow sailors who served on just two small ships HMS MELITA & HMS SCOUT didn't qualify for a Queen's Sudan Medal.
[BACKGROUND TO A NAVAL RARITY]Khedive's Sudan medals to the Royal Navy are as rare as hen's teeth and only surface once in a blue moon.
This is one of just 130 awarded to the ship ....and the grand total the two ships who's men were entitled was under 275 medals.
The survival rate is classically 20%....so p'raps there are only 55 surviving medals, so clearly a very tiny number.
Indeed, our research has found just TWELVE auction appearances since 1992 !! ...and three of those was one medal appearing on three occasions !....so, just NINE medals in 26 years!) THIS MEDAL IS THEREFORE A MAJOR RARITY IN SUPERB EF+
