AN EXCEPTIONALLY LONG SERVED GREAT WAR & WW2 ROYAL MARINES, & R.M.L.I. GROUP OF NINE.To:GUNNER - CAPTAIN H.R. HORNE.1914-15 Trio & Six WW2 medals. With original parchments & many other important original papers & photos. [BIOGRAPHY] HARRY REYNOLDS HORNE was born on 26th December 1882 in Norwich, Norfolk. Before enlistment at the age of 17 years he had been employed as a Barman. Oddly he was a Primitive Methodist who of course don't drink ! He first enlisted on 24th October 1900 at Deal, Kent as a Private in C company. He then served in various ships and at numerous shore establishments and is seen becoming a gunnery instructor in 1909 with sea service from 4th April 1909.
On the declaration of WW1 he is seen as a Sergeant in HMS DREADNAUGHT & HMS CENTURION, from which ship ( in the North Sea ) he is seen sending a photographic Christmas card in December 1914. Included in the extensive original papers are two very interesting "HURT CERTIFICATES" in which on 11th December 1922 he is recorded as having fallen head first in the moat of the fort building at Rathmullen in Ireland ( allegedly sober !....but see newspaper report later in this write up !!! ) His second 'Hurt' was caused by lifting a 2cwt bag of shipping coal while serving in HMS Emperor of India on 9th April 1923. From this situation he sustained a right inguinal hernia. Also from HMS CENTURIAN we have his original gunnery qualification certificate giving an overall marking of 90%. He was clearly a decent Gunner. Also included is small book & pay book both containing valuable research details. Both of his original velum service documents are also here and show his entire service history from 1900-1922. He initially retired from the R.M. in 1932. He was called up again in 1940 & apparently commissioned in 1941. He served all over the world in WW2 and thus has most of the WW2 stars & medals.
Although Mr Horne was originally from Norfolk he made his home in Gosport, Hampshire for over 50 years. He had been a member of the Portsmouth area rates and valuation panel in his civilian capacity. He was also a keen gardener & member of the Gosport horticultural society. Also a Freemason he was a member of the Prince of Wales Lodge, Gosport. He died on February 11th 1958 aged 73 with a service at St Mary's Church, Alverstoke on Saturday 15th February.
