On July 9th 1917, the British steamer SS Calliope, on a voyage from Sevilla to Newport, Montreal with a cargo of ore, was sunk by the German submarine U-155 (Karl Meusel), some 150 miles north of Madeira. Sunk with all 27 hands and posted as missing.
S/S CALLIOPE; was owned by the Calliope Steamship Co. Ltd, London (Scaramanga Bros.) and built in 1900 by William Pickersgill & Sons, Sunderland; 2,883 tons; 324x47.1x21.7 ft. ; 282 n.h.p.; 9.5knots; triple expansion engines. On July 12th, 1917, Calliope, was on a voyage from Sevilla Spain to Newport with a cargo of iron ore, was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-155 (Kapitänleutnant Karl Meusel) 150 miles North of Madeira. All 27 crew died. The medals which are mint with original ribbons come complete with original box and interior envelopes. Also here is the original registered envelope and death notification letter sent to Mrs Emma COWDELL at 292 London Road, Westcliff-on-Sea.
Henry John COWDELL has no known grave and is commemorated with honour at TOWER HILL MEMORIAL, LONDON. HE WAS 57. SOLD
