An Interesting 'CHIEF SHIP'S COOK' 1914-15 Trio.To:137007 G.HILLS. R.N. (H.M.S. HUMBER)Who died of a haemorrhage following cardiac disease & aneurysm while on station in Alexandria, Egypt after 28 years service.[BIOGRAPHY]GEORGE HILLS was born in Sheerness, Kent on 2nd December 1867. Before enlisting in the Royal Navy he had been a Grocer's Assistant. He enlisted 1st January 1886 aged 18 for an initial 12 years. He is then 'slightly oddly' seen being "Paid Off , No Longer Required" on 27th November 1889, but with much continued service in the fleet ( including HMS CRESSY) up until 29th February 1908 when he is seen being paid off as a 'Shore Pensioner'. By this date he had served for 22 years. Being of VG character throughout this initial pre-war service he is entitled to an L.S.G.C. but there is no record of this being awarded or claimed. He was then recalled (or volunteered) for service in the Great War on 2nd August 1914 and he again served in his capacity of Chief Ship's Cook up until his death from natural causes in HMS HUMBER on 4th September 1916 at Alexandria, aged 49. George is buried in Alexandria. An unusual group to a man who probably cooked a million square meals for the hungry men of the Royal Navy. The medals are 'Mint State' on original ribbons & accompanied by the original issue letter & the 1915 star issue box.CURRENTLY RESEARCHING.
