The Battlecruiser HMS Invincible was Flagship of the 3rd Battlecruiser squadron at the Battle of Jutland. She was commanded by Admiral Hood.
At 18:34 on 31st May 1916 she was hit by a German shell which penetrated the Q turret ammunition magazine which caused a catastrophic explosion which caused the ship to split in two.
She was lost with almost all hands there being 1,021 named casualties...... and only 6 survivors.

GEORGE HOLLY COOPER was born in Winchester, Hampshire on 30th March 1884. He was the son of Henry & Fanny Cooper of Broughton, Stockbridge, Hampshire and the husband of Mildred Alvena Cooper of "Seaview" 40 Hollam Road, Milton, Portsmouth. Prior to joining the Royal Navy he was a Farm Labourer. He attested at age 18 on 2nd May 1902 for a 12 year engagement. He was lost at sea in the sinking of HMS Invincible at age 31.George is commemorated with eternal honour on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
