[BIOGRAPHY]1924-
Alick Henderson was a Church of England lad born in Blackpool, Lancashire on 4th June 1924. He volunteered to join the Royal Navy as a Boy II Class (Telegraphist) at Davenport straight from school at the age of just 15 on 15th November 1939 with an initial engagement of 12 years. His first period of service ended on 11th December 1953 at which time he’s seen re-engaging for a bounty of £100 to complete his time for a Naval pension.
He had a greatly remarkable & long naval career of 24 years which took in almost every theatre of World War 2, with additional later service in the 1950’s for The Korean War. His main ship of service was Battleship HMS RENOWN (20th August 1941-16th March 1945). As well as other extensive voyages to Africa and the Mediterranean, he also took part in the brutally challenging and greatly dangerous business of defending the critically important Russian Arctic Convoys to Murmansk, for which he later earned The Arctic Star.
He lost the end of his left hand middle finger in 1941 after an accident where a heavy battery fell on his hand.
He was married to Patricia Alice Henderson with an address in Harraby, Carlisle, Cumbria. He left the Royal Navy on 13th April 1964.
This greatly exceptional group comes complete with both Mr Henderson’s original, extensive & greatly interesting velum service documents, two hurt certificates, and his telegraphers multi-qualification certificate, showing that he was a most highly qualified & experienced individual in his professional subject of radio telegraphy. An excellent & desirable group worthy of inclusion in the best of Royal Navy collections.
