[THE MEDALS]
1914-15 Star (2690 2 A.M. L. Mitchell, R.F.C.)
British War and Victory Medals (2690 A.S.M. 2 L. Mitchell, R.A.F.)
General Service 1918-62, (KURDISTAN) (2690 F./Sgt. L. Mitchell, R.A.F.)
1939-45 Star; Defence and War Medal (*M.I.D.) *1940 “Fighter Command” Served at Fighter Command HQ at Bentley Priory during the Battle of Britain under Hugh Dowding C in C Fighter command.
(The three WW2 awards impressed “Sq. Ldr. L. Mitchell, R.A.F”) in a style which exactly & identically matches the normal officially impressed military style of the day. *In our opinion these were almost certainly officially named for Sqd/Ldr Mitchell by the medal office at his special request, as this just isn’t “Boots the chemists” post war style naming.
George V Silver Jubilee Medal 1935 (unnamed as issued)
Royal Air Force L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., coinage bust (2690 S.M. 1. L. Mitchell, R.A.F.)
Royal Air Force. Meritorious Service Medal, G.V.R., coinage bust (For South Russia)
(2690 F./Sjt. L. Mitchell, R.A.F.)
*Russia, Medal of St. Stanislaus. (For South Russia)
....Both his MSM & St Stanislaus for:
“Consistent hard work and devotion to duty during the period from April 1919 to December 1919 under the most trying circumstances”[London Gazette of 1st April 1920 refers].
IRAQ. King Feisal’s War Medal, with clasp, the reverse inscribed, ‘L. Mitchell’
[*Note:]
On his official RAF records, Wing/Cdr Mitchell is shown as having received the ribbon for the Order of St.Stanislaus.
As is normal with many awards, the ribbon was clearly sent to him first, probably via the Air Ministry in advance of the award itself. As is the case with his M.S.M., his St Stanislaus was earned in relation to his distinguished services in South Russia while operating under arduous conditions in action against the Bolsheviks. However and probably due to the fast moving revolutionary events in Russia at the time and following the execution of the Tsar & Royal Family and with the Russian state falling into the hands of the communists, we are of the opinion that he probably never received the actual St Stanislaus award itself.
At the time of all the previously recorded sales of Leonard Mitchell’s medals the missing award has always been represented by “The Russian Silver Medal For Zeal” (but worn on the St Stanislaus ribbon) which we believe he may actually have worn in his group
We have thus replaced the missing *St Stanislaus award with a “seriously superb & exacting” silver-gilt and enamel museum quality reproduction which is frankly so well made it’s just as good as an original.
. *Originals are sometimes available at between £1800-£2500 .
The afore mentioned & temporary “Russian Silver Medal For Zeal” is also included in this sale.
This group is composed of a really magnificent, historically important & totally unique combination of RFC, RAF and foreign medals to a man who started his career as a lowly 2.AM with the RFC and finished his career as a Wing Commander in the RAF. His service spanned two world wars, two overseas campaigns, in Kurdistan and that in revolutionary South Russia.
Comes with a HUGE research file.
£5495 A Totally Unique Combination. (with quality part-exchanges welcome)
