(A VETERAN of 53 SORTIES OVER GERMANY 1943-45, with 166 & 149 SQUADRONS. Wellingtons & Lancasters.) D.F.M. LONDON GAZETTE 17th JULY 1945. Complete with a superb log book which contains details of 53 ops over the most heavily defended targets in Germany & much training and operational conversion flying. Took part in many of the most famous raids of the war, INCLUDING THE FAMOUS "FIRE RAID" on DRESDEN which took place on 13th March 1945. Interestingly Mr Apppleby recently applied for and was issued with a full set of 'new issue' stars & medals by the medal office. This recent issue all carry his name & details as an officer on the base of their respective boxes. The newly issued awards are totally 'official' Royal Mint productions but are struck on a slightly lighter gauge metal which has a slightly different colour to the post war issue stars.A Classic Air Gunner DFM assembly with a totally amazing log book which records 53 night (and day) bombing sorties over enemy territory. Flt/Sgt Appleby was indeed a VERY fortunate airman to have survived almost two full tours in Bomber Command.
