A VERY Scarce & Ultra Early Entrant on 12th August 1914 which was only EIGHT DAYS after the declaration of the war on 4th AUGUST 1914. Also, Pte Thomas Blackham was indeed a great rarity as he then served right through The Great War of 1914-1918 and SURVIVED THE ENTIRE PERIOD OF THE WAR and was still in regular service until well after the armistice of 11th November 1918.The vast majority of his "Old Contemptible" Regular Army comrades who had arrived in France at the start of hostilities had been killed or wounded in the brutal initial battles of the war and by November 1918 there were very very few "untouched" survivors from the original standing army of 1914 who were still in regular service. He was a truly lucky man. His medals were sent to him at 2nd North Staffs Whittington Barracks in Lichfield and his clasp is seen being sent to him there by the C.O. of his old unit on 28th April 1923 !!
