TWO OFFICER "CASUALTY BROTHERS'Both with 10th Battalion DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY.Capt,CHARLES EDWARD STEWART.10th Bn D.L.I. MILITARY CROSS.1915 Star Trio (M.I.D.) & Plaque.
KILLED IN ACTION 10th April 1917Charles was fatally wounded during the initial attack of 9th April 1917 ( 1st Day of The Battle of Arras ) He was rescued from the battlefield and taken to 43rd C.C.S. where he died of his wounds in the early hours of 10th April. Charles' M.C. was gazetted on 14th June 1917. The recommendation records that it was a "Posthumous for Conspicuous Service during the previous 12 months prior to his death" ( full details to follow ) The reverse of his M.C.carries original engraving of his name and the date of 18th September 1917. We are currently researching the relevance of this date which is not immediately apparent.He is remembered with eternal honour in WALINCOURT HALTE BRITISH CEMETERY, SAULTY. ( VIII B.1)His headstone carries the words," WE ARE MORE THAN CONQUERORS THROUGH HIM THAT LOVED US"

Lt FREDERIC ARNOLD STEWART.10th Bn D.L.I. 1915 Trio & Plaque. KILLED IN ACTION. 16th September 1916. Frederic was Killed In Action during the middle stages of The Battle of The Somme in the famous attack on GRID TRENCH at DELVILLE WOOD. The position was heavily defended by German machine guns which accounted for a major number of casualties during this action. Grid Trench was finally captured on 26th September 1916. Unlike his brother, his body was never recovered from the battle field and he has no known grave. Fred is commemorated on The Thiepval Memorial to The Missing, Somme, France.
Both Charles and Frederic were the sons of John George Stewart & Florence Jane Wilhelmina Grosvenor Stewart of 'Dunraven' Lasswade, Midlothian. Charles Stewart had been 'Writer to The Signet' in Edinburgh. Both brothers arrived in France on 10th August 1915 and had also both served with 15th Bn Royal Scots ( MICs confirm ).
