A VERY RARE "ATTRIBUTED" SOUTHERN RHODESIA WAR MEDAL 1939-1945.
To:
Mr D.A.P. JOHNSTONE
The Southern Rhodesian War Medal is a legendary & seriously difficult medal to locate.
A total of only 5,000 were struck, but with only 3,908 of the medals actually being issued, it's not a medal that's often encountered.
Indeed, as they were all issued unnamed it's seriously rare to encounter an example with full documentary attribution.
The 'practically mint' example offered here not only comes with its original named issue slip, (we've never seen another example) but is also accompanied by its original registered & addressed O.H.M.S. Southern Rhodesian Medal Office mailing envelope.
The medal was sent to Mr Johnstone at The Standard Bank of S.A. in Kimberly on 11th February 1949, but via Salisbury it was re-addressed to the Claremont branch of the bank, where it finally arrived on 4th March 1950 ! .....so 11 months in transit !!!!
Is this a delay record for a registered letter ?
