DISTINGUISED CONDUCT MEDAL
1914-15 Star Trio,
To:
8338. Lance-Corporal. A.C. LOWRY / LOWREY
9th (City of London) Royal Fusiliers.
(To France, May 15th 1915)
WITH A SUPERB 'ONE MAN ARMY' BATTLE CITATION !
(Battle of Loos)
Hohenzollern Redoubt
L/Cpl Lowry almost certainly won his DCM in the Loos trenches at the Quarries on or around 12-13 February 1916 and by 15 February held the line from there to the Hohenzollern Redoubt.
Little trace remains today of the once fearsome Hohenzollern Redoubt and Fosse 8. The small hillock and rough ground in this shot mark the spot. The higher summit in the background is on the site of the Hulluch Quarries.
This picture is taken from near Quarry Cemetery, facing Auchy les Mines.

New to the market and direct from the family of the recipient, this is a totally superb award with a seriously impressive battle citation. Apparently, L/Cpl Lowry, after being constantly harried by several and constant German attacks decided that he had endured quite enough and grabbed up two canvas bags full of Mills Grenades ("Bombs") and in an exposed position, under heavy fire and in close proximity to the enemy, proceeded to single handedly throw the grenades into the German position, He thus, much to the astonishment and congratulation of his officer, held up one of the German attacks completely on his own.
( A WW1 Mills Grenade 'inert' of the type used by Lowry
is included in the sale)
The Official Citation Reads

" For Conspicuous Gallantry , when his company was hotly pressed by three counter attacks, Lance-Cpl Lowry with two bags of Bombs held up one attack single handed"
