CRIMEA MEDAL (1854) J. MORGAN . GRENADIER GUARDS. DIED at SCUTARI HOSPITAL.

 J. MORGAN .
GRENADIER GUARDS.
(officially Impressed)

DIED at SCUTARI HOSPITAL.

Without doubt, behind this medal is yet another story of the tragedy of the disease brought on by the shocking conditions of the Crimean War. Having died on 13th February 1855 Morgan will have become sick during the nightmare winter of 1854-5, during the seige of Sebastopol, which saw hundreds of men and horses dropping dead with hunger and sickness caused by the terrible winter storms which hit the area toward the end of November. The break in the weather brought conditions which ruined the Allies' camps and supply lines. Men and horses became sick and starved in the poor conditions. Dysentry and Enteric ever put many men in hospital and there were many deaths of these then lethal complaints.

The famous NURSE FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE "THE LADY WITH THE LAMP" arrived at Scutari Hospital in November 1854 just after The Battle of Inkerman and lLike so many of other soldiers John C. Scott who had fallen seriously ill was nursed by Florence and her nursing team before he finally died at Scutari Hospital on 28th February 1855. Corporal Scott would certainly have seen Nurse Nightingale on her rounds as she was a prominent and highly visible person at the hospital.
