1914 Star & Bar Trio
2nd Bn. King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry
(VERY Early Prisoner of War at Le Cateau)
26th AUGUST 1914
To:
8927. Pte. F. ROBINSON. YORKS. L.I.
A very interesting group to a man who took part in the famous rear guard action at Le Cateau during the Mons Retreat.
2nd Bn KOYLI were heavily involved with this famous action where the C.O. Major Yate won his VC during the famous final stand against the advancing Germans with his last 19 men.
This is a sheer classic "Old Contemptables" trio on original ribbons with original Aug -Nov clasp,
mounted as worn and still retains traces of Brasso where the recipient last cleaned his medals !!!
Researching this group has thrown up some interesting factors concerning the "qualifying date" shown on this man's MIC and those of several of his comrades also captured on the same day. The entire batallion arrived in France from Ireland on 16th August 1914 at Le Havre , yet many of the mens' cards give later "qual' dates. Our man Robinson's MIC gives a Q date of 26th August 1914, but we most strongly believe that this is the date upon which he and may hundreds of his fellows in 2nd KOYLI were captured and killed at Le Cateau. Further research will no doubt confirm this date as his POW date.
(I'm pleased to receive any confirmations if you are a KOYLI expert !)
A VERY RARE & ORIGINAL GROUP
