1653. Pte Herbert Best was from Norton Sub Hampdon, Crewkern, Somerest and at age 18 years and two months he joined the 36th Brigade, Somerset Light Infantry at Newport, Monmouthshire, on
20th January 1879. He was a mason before enlistment. With service in South Africa (1879) and Egypt (1884-86) his time in the service was exactly 12 years, being discharged 14th January 1891. During his service he served in Ireland ( Dublin, Athenry, Enniskillin and Londonderry) and had three spells in hospital with Gonorrhoea and Muscular Rheumatism.
