A very important and highly emotive
"MM Double Gallantry" and 1914 Star pair.
The War and Victory Medals were sadly lost many years ago.
This gallant soldier had what was perhaps one of the luckiest series of escapes in WW1 in that his regiment suffered one of the highest loss rates of all.
The 1st North Staffs entered France 10th September 1914 and were sent to the
Amentieres section and took part in 1st Ypres. In December 1914 they were
in the trenches at "Rue-Du-Bois" near Fleurbiax, and took part in
THE CHRITMAS TRUCE.
(Medals impressed "KENNY" ...MIC and MM Card "KENNEY & KENNY")
In March 1915 they took part in the successful action at Neuve-Chapelle and captured the village of L'Epinette. In April -June 1916 the unit lost 500 men in two serious gas attacks in the trenches north of Wulverghem (near Messines).
The regiment took part in The Battle of The Somme and in August -September 1916 during bitter fighting around Guillemont and during the defence of Delville Wood they lost 350 casualties. They then took part in the assault on
Messines Ridge 31st July at 3rd Ypres. The unit was practically wiped out before the end of the war.
A SUPERB PAIR WORTHY OF INCLUSION IN THE FINEST COLLECTION.
