This photograph shows the 1st East Lancashire Regiment facing the enemy at Solesmes on 25 August 1914. The caption to the original photograph describes these shallow scrapes as "trenches" - little did they know what these earthworks would develop into within a very few months.
HISTORY
The 1st East Lancs Regiment fought with the Accrington Pals (11th East Lancs) in the bitter action at Serre and were also in action at Beaumont Hamel where 700 men went into action and only 237 came back !
A highly emotive and historically interesting medal. This soldier had been fighting in a France from 'day one' of the shooting war and had survived many of the most attricious actions and brutal battles of the war.
He fell very late in the war having survived a great deal longer than many of the men in his unit.
Richard A. Harrington is remembered with honour in Monchy British Cemetery, Monchy-Le-Preux, France.
A super medal to a much collected regiment.
With its original ribbon and clasp. Also entitled to a War & Victory Medal. SOLD
