The initialing differential on this group was clearly caused by the (very common) confusion between the letters N & W when hand written on documents.
The service number on the group is constant throughout as '580'
His MILITARY MEDAL having been gazetted on 27th October was clearly won during the early days of the Battle of The Somme.
This soldier was from Shirley in Hampshire, enlisted in Fordingbridge and entered France on 20th December 1914. He was mortally wounded in the trenches near DERNANCOURT by German action on 24th August 1916 and died of his wounds on 26th August, probably at 36th CCS at HEILLY.
Buried at HEILLY STATION CEMETERY, MERICOURT-L'ABBE, Somme. Eight miles S/W of ALBERT. Grave Ref: III. G.7.
