George Reginald Batten was born in 1896 and was the son of Caleb & Rhoda Lavina Batten, of 157, Morely Avenue, Wood Green, Lomdon. He entered France on 5th March 1915.

[FIRST DAY, BATTLE OF THE SOMME. 1st JULY 1916]
On 1st July 1916, George Batten and his unit were positioned ready for the diversionary attack at Gommercout Wood, Somme on the First Day of The Battle of The Somme.

George was one of the 167 men of 6th North Staffs who were killed in action during the attack. Many more were seriously wounded and died later.

He had also previously fought in the German 'liquid fire' attack at Hooge in July 1915, and had taken part in the fierce action at Hohenzollern Redoubt & in the Battle of Loos.

George was one of the very few 1st July casualties who's body was recovered from the battlefield and he has a grave & headstone at Gommercourt Wood New Cemetary, Foncquevillers, France.

His headstone inscription chosen by his father reads:
"GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS"
