Discharged at his own request in June 1866 to live in York.Much further research possible with this one ! This soldier was clearly always in a lot of regular 'bother' .....as follows:
a) SERVED IN N.Z. 27th November 1846 to 28th February 1865.
In arrest: 13th -20th October 1855
Reduced to Pte 21st October 1855 - 31st June 1857
( prom' corporal 5th April 1861-25th April 1862 (promotion lasted just 20 days !!)
Tried & reduced: 26th April 1861 - 28th April 1861
Reduced to Pte: 29th April 1861 - 17th July 1862
Tried & imprisoned: 18th February 1862 - 4th April 1862
Released as Pte ... 5th April 1862 - 6th April 1862 ( out for just one day !! )
(Re-arrested and imprisoned for 'inattention' 7th April 1862 - 10th May 1862)
Promoted Cpl 15th January 1866 - 17th May 1866
In arrest: 18th May 1866 - 20th May 1866
Tried and Reduced: Private, 21st May 1866 - 15th June 1866
His name appeared 11 times in the defaulters book and he was court marshalled 4 times
**Note**( As several major sections of his unit, 65th Foot, clearly took part in the action at Wanganui and as Pickering wasn't in jail on that date, I think you can pretty much safely assume that he took part in the action. As he arrived in NZ on 27th November 1846, it was most probably his first taste of action. )If you collect seriously nice specimen type medals, this one is for you. The Medal is quite superb and is in Practically MINT STATE ! Very rare to find a New Zealand medal quite as good as this. £795
