A MAGNIFICENT & HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT
1/24th FOOT (Warwickshire) REGt (South Wales Borderers)
OFFICERS' HELMET PLATE , "24" and "Egypt" COLLAR DOGS.
Attributed to: Lieut CHARLES JOHN ATKINSON(Killed in Action at Isandhlwana 22nd January 1879) This is a totally legendary Victorian brass & silver helmet plate & collar dogs of the type which were worn during the Zulu Wars at places like Rorke's Drift and Isandlewana.
This particular plate came to us with an attribution to Lieut Charles John Atkinson of 1/24 who was killed in the famous battle with the Zulus at Isandlewana.
The plate and dogs are mounted with an old Indian Ink named panel on a very old red velvet covered board. Clearly it would be impossible to prove that this was his spare badge, but in this case we think that there's a very high possibility that it was.
In any case, this is a really lovely item.
With research papers into the career of Lt Atkinson.
