[BIOGRAPHY]
Henry HARROLD was born in Battersea, London, in 1878. Prior to leaving for what was eventually going to be a new life in South Africa he had been a London printer. Having been a reservist in the 4th Vol Bn East Surrey Regt, and on 8th March 1902, and at age 23 & 4 months, he attested for The East Surrey, Vol Service Coy, at Kingston-on-Thames, Surrey. He officially arrived for service in South Africa on 17th April 1902. The Boer War officially ended on 31st May 1902, so this man's service qualification for his QSA hangs on just being a few weeks in theatre and at just over 5 weeks is just about the latest example imaginable. This unusual initial issue of a no clasp QSA (which was originally issued to him via the first medal roll of June 1902 ) was subsequently upgraded when he received the two clasps for Transvaal & South Africa 1902. These are referred to on the main 'volunteers section' of 2nd East Surrey Regt medal roll of 19th May 1903. These he slipped onto the original ribbon which is still present with its top end sewn over to prevent their loss.

A Unique South African Group of Six. QSA, East Surrey (4th Vols), NATAL REBELLION (1906),Durban L.I. 1914-15 TRIO, (1st Inf, & S.A. Field Telephone & Postal Corps),COLONIAL AUXILIARY L. S. MEDAL. 1st S.A. Inf (D.L.I.) [AN EARLY SOUTH AFRICAN POSTAL ORDER]
(**The group comes with an associated Orange Free State 10/- Shilling postal order which bears what is perhaps one of the very lowest surviving serial number of A1.00450, purchased very close the first series issue date in Seneka O.F.S. on 18th April 1898 and cashed in Durban on 25th April 1898.)

In superlative condition, this is an exceptionally interesting group to a British ex-pat' soldier who fought the Boers, the local African natives and also the Germans in Africa & in France during the Great War.

A Unique South African Group of Six. QSA, East Surrey (4th Vols), NATAL REBELLION (1906),Durban L.I. 1914-15 TRIO, (1st Inf, & S.A. Field Telephone & Postal Corps),COLONIAL AUXILIARY L. S. MEDAL. 1st S.A. Inf (D.L.I.)With the very rare & almost never seen C.A.F. L.S. medal.
Probably a unique combination and worthy of much extra research.
